Cupping Floors Repair

Cupping floors — where the edges of hardwood planks sit higher than the centers — are almost always a moisture problem, not a flooring problem. We find and fix the moisture source underneath the house.

What Cupping Floors Mean

Cupping happens when the edges of hardwood boards lift higher than their centers, creating a wavy, uneven surface. It's a sign of uneven moisture — usually excess humidity below the floor, in a crawl space or basement, being absorbed unevenly by the wood from underneath.

We don't do direct hardwood floor repair or refinishing. What we do is diagnose and fix the moisture source causing the cupping — crawl space humidity, a damp basement, or ground moisture. Once that moisture is controlled, a flooring contractor can address the boards themselves.

Signs & Causes

  • Board edges visibly higher than their centers
  • Gaps between boards that open and close with the seasons
  • A musty smell or noticeably higher humidity near the floor
  • A damp crawl space or basement beneath the affected room

How We Address It

We start with an inspection to find out whether the moisture is coming from a damp crawl space, a basement, or general humidity in the home. Depending on what we find, the fix can involve crawl space encapsulation, dehumidification, sealing, drainage corrections, or mold removal where moisture has already caused fungal growth.

Frequently Asked Questions

If the moisture source is your crawl space, controlling that moisture is usually the key step — floors often flatten out as the wood re-equalizes, though the boards themselves may still need attention from a flooring contractor.

Rob and his crew are super. I had a very big project to renovate a 130-year old farmhouse. They worked diligently to put in new piers, new girders, and new joists. Then they also help to fix some frames and add subfloor. This allowed me to move on. Really enjoyed working with Rob.

Very professional! They carried out their task while going the extra mile. It was obvious to me that quality is of great importance. They left it better than they found it. I would recommend them to my greatest of friends and family.

After having some minor flooding issues, we contacted Triangle Reconstruction and they were amazing in their ability to identify the issues and the best way to address it. What was most impressive was the team that came out and did the work. They were probably the most professional and organized crew we've ever seen work on our house. Brian, our rep, and Rob, the owner, regularly checked in on their work and kept us updated on the progress. I hope I never have to deal with flooding issues again, but if I do, I'll call Triangle Reconstruction again.
