Sump Pump Installation
A sump pump is the only part of a crawl space system that deals with water that has already arrived. Everything else keeps water out; the pump gets it back out again when the ground wins anyway.

A sump pump sits in a pit — a lined basin dug into the lowest point of the crawl space or basement floor, positioned where water naturally collects. Water flows into the pit, a float switch rises with it, and the pump turns on and pushes it out through a discharge line to a point far enough from the house that it cannot simply soak back down to where it started.
Most of what separates a good installation from a bad one is invisible once the job is finished:
- Pit placement and depth. The pit has to be at the true low point, and deep enough that the pump cycles on a sensible interval rather than short-cycling itself to death.
- Pump sizing. Horsepower is matched to how much water the space actually takes and how high the discharge has to lift it. An oversized pump short-cycles; an undersized one runs continuously and burns out.
- A check valve on the discharge line. Without one, the column of water in the pipe drains straight back into the pit every time the pump shuts off, so the pump immediately runs again.
- Where the discharge terminates. Far enough from the foundation, and graded away from it. A discharge line that dumps against the wall is a closed loop.
- A dedicated circuit. A pump sharing a circuit with anything that can trip it is a pump that is off when you need it.
Sump Pumps in a Crawl Space vs. a Basement
Most homes here sit over a crawl space rather than a basement, and the job is not quite the same. In a crawl space the pit is cut into ground that is usually bare soil or sitting under a vapor barrier, the working room is measured in inches, and the pump is out of sight — which means nobody notices it has failed until the space is already wet. In a basement the pit goes through a slab and the failure is obvious the moment it happens.
The practical consequence is that a crawl space pump needs a way to tell you it is in trouble, and it needs checking on a schedule rather than when you happen to think of it.

Sump pumps are consumable. A typical residential unit lasts somewhere in the range of seven to ten years, and one that has been working hard in a wet crawl space can be at the shorter end of that. Replacement usually makes more sense than repair when the motor itself is going, when the pump is older than about seven years, or when it was undersized for the space in the first place — which is common in pumps installed as an afterthought rather than as part of a system.
Replacing it is also the moment to correct the things around it, because the pit is already open: the check valve, the discharge route, the switch type, and whether there is a backup.
Sump Pump Repair
Most pumps that stop working have not died of old age. The usual culprits, roughly in order of how often we find them:
- A float switch jammed against the side of the pit, or tangled on the discharge pipe, so the pump never gets the signal to start
- A blocked intake screen, silted up from a pit with no liner
- A discharge line clogged, crushed, or frozen at the outlet
- A failed check valve, leaving the pump cycling constantly on the same few gallons
- No power at all — a tripped breaker or a GFCI that went days ago and nobody saw
Several of those are cheap fixes. That is worth saying plainly: a pump that is not running is not automatically a pump that needs replacing.
Battery Backup
The storm that fills your crawl space is very often the same storm that takes the power out, so a pump with no backup is a pump that is off during the one event it exists for. A battery backup runs the pump from stored power until utility power returns, and a monitored system can tell you it has switched over rather than leaving you to find out afterwards.
How a Sump Pump Fits With the Rest of the System
A pump on its own waits for water to find the pit. Paired with interior drainage or a french drain, water is actively routed to the pit instead, which is what makes the pump effective rather than merely present. And a pump handles bulk water only — humidity is a different problem, solved by encapsulation and a dehumidifier. If your crawl space is both wet and humid, those are two fixes, not one.
Signs Your Sump Pump Needs Attention
- It runs constantly, or cycles on and off every few seconds
- It makes noise it did not used to make — grinding, rattling, or a hum with no water moving
- There is standing water in the crawl space and the pump is dry
- Visible rust on the body, or silt built up in the pit
- It is more than seven years old and has never been tested
- You do not know whether it works, which is the most common answer we get
Test yours by pouring a bucket of water into the pit. The pump should start, clear the pit, and stop. If it does not do all three, it is not going to do them in a storm either.
Frequently Asked Questions
Encapsulation and vapor barriers manage moisture vapor and humidity, but they aren't designed to handle bulk water — standing water from heavy rain or a high water table still needs somewhere to go. If your crawl space takes on actual water, not just dampness, a sump pump is the right tool alongside encapsulation, not instead of it.
Roughly seven to ten years for a typical residential unit, and toward the shorter end if it runs often. Age alone is a reason to test it rather than to replace it — but a pump past about seven years that has never been checked is worth looking at before a storm rather than during one.
Not necessarily, and it is worth finding out before spending. A jammed float switch, a clogged intake, a blocked discharge line or a failed check valve will all stop a perfectly good pump, and all of them are cheaper to fix than to replace. We check those first.
